A data strategy that begins with technology produces a warehouse full of tables nobody queries. Beginning with the decisions the business needs to make keeps every later choice anchored to value.
Collecting candidate use cases
Interview marketing, product, service and finance leads about decisions they make weekly and the data they wish they had. Typical answers include churn prediction, cross-sell offers, onboarding personalisation and service prioritisation.
Scoring and sequencing
Rate each use case on value, feasibility and data readiness. The first release should include one use case that is visible and quick, so the programme earns credibility before tackling the hard ones.
Writing the use case brief
For each chosen case record the decision, the trigger, the data required, the destination system and the metric that shows it worked. This brief drives the platform requirements later.
Action step
Interview three stakeholders from different functions and write one use case brief each. Score them and pick the one you would deliver first with a sentence of justification.
