The CCSK exam is built on the Cloud Security Alliance’s Security Guidance, and that guidance opens with definitions. Getting the CSA’s vocabulary exact — not merely close — is the first requirement for passing an open-book exam.
Essential Characteristics of Cloud
The guidance builds on the NIST definition: on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service. A hosted server that requires a phone call to provision is not cloud by this definition. CCSK questions often present borderline scenarios and ask whether they qualify, so test each characteristic against the scenario rather than trusting the label a vendor uses.
Multitenancy and Resource Pooling
Cloud providers serve many customers from shared infrastructure, separating tenants through logical isolation rather than physical walls. This pooling drives cloud economics, but it also creates the signature cloud security concern: your workloads share hardware with strangers. Understanding that isolation is enforced by software — hypervisors, orchestration layers, and access controls — explains why so much cloud security effort concentrates there.
Why Definitions Shape Security Decisions
Each essential characteristic carries a security consequence. Self-service means anyone with credentials can create infrastructure, so identity becomes the perimeter. Elasticity means servers appear and vanish in minutes, so security processes built around static asset lists fail. Measured service means detailed logs exist if you collect them. The exam rewards tracing characteristics to their security implications.
Action Step
Write the five essential characteristics from memory, and beside each add one sentence naming its main security implication. Compare your list with the definitions section of the current CSA Security Guidance, correct any drift, and tab that section of the document since the CCSK exam permits open-book reference.
