A MarTech stack is only as coherent as the data model beneath it. Before adding tools, a practitioner maps how a single customer is represented across every system and where the authoritative version lives.

The system of record

Decide which system holds the definitive customer profile: often a CRM or a customer data platform. Every other tool consumes from it rather than inventing its own version, which prevents contradictory data.

Identity resolution

The same person appears as an email address, a device, a loyalty number and a support ticket. Agree how these are stitched into one identity so a journey does not treat one human as four.

Data flows not point tools

Draw how records move between collection, storage, activation and analytics. Most stack problems are flow problems, where a field exists in one tool but never reaches the one that needs it.

Action step

Draw your stack as data flows between four stages: collection, storage, activation and analytics. Mark the system of record and one field that fails to reach a tool that needs it.
