Program protection is the discipline of keeping a programme’s most sensitive technology and information from reaching an adversary who could copy it, counter it or turn it against you. It runs through the whole acquisition lifecycle rather than sitting in one office.
Protecting capability not just data
The goal is to preserve a military or technological advantage. That means guarding not only classified documents but the design details, algorithms and manufacturing knowledge that let an adversary replicate or defeat a capability.
A lifecycle activity
Protection decisions made at concept shape what is possible later. Retrofitting protection onto a fielded system is expensive and often impossible, so the discipline begins early and continues through disposal.
Everyone’s responsibility
Engineers, programme managers, security staff and suppliers each hold part of the picture. Program protection fails when it is treated as one team’s paperwork rather than a shared engineering concern woven through the design.
