ChatGPT and tools like it can feel like magic or like a threat, and both reactions fade once you understand what is actually happening inside. No math required; a good mental model is enough to use these tools well.

A Very Well-Read Autocomplete

A large language model is a computer program trained on enormous amounts of text: books, articles, websites, conversations. From all that reading, it learned patterns about which words tend to follow which other words in which situations. When you type a question, it generates a response one small piece at a time, each piece chosen to fit the patterns it learned. It is like the autocomplete on your phone, scaled up to a system that has absorbed a large slice of human writing.

Why That Simple Trick Works So Well

Because so much human knowledge lives in text, predicting text well means the model can draft emails, explain concepts, summarize documents, translate languages, and brainstorm ideas. It picked up grammar, facts, reasoning patterns, and writing styles along the way, not because anyone programmed rules, but because those things help predict what comes next in real writing.

What It Is Not Doing

The model is not looking up answers in a database, not browsing the internet unless a search feature is switched on, and not checking whether its statements are true. It produces plausible text, and plausible usually overlaps with correct, but not always. Holding onto that distinction is the single most important idea in this entire course.

Action Step

Open a free AI assistant and ask it to explain what your business does to a ten-year-old, then ask the same question twice more. Notice the answers differ each time. That variation is pattern generation at work, and seeing it firsthand beats any definition.

Educational content only. AI tools change quickly and can produce confident errors — verify important outputs independently. No productivity or income outcome is promised, and this is not business or legal advice.
